Deliberate soft touches, even pressure and a calm environment, these things force you to control your heart rate and breathing, to stay calm and peaceful while you wrap, soothe and position the newborn. These sessions are some of my favorite, they’re so peaceful and calming.

Thea was a rockstar today, the most smiles of any newborn and my first newborn to not cry even once. She’s beautiful and perfect!

I got the opportunity to do something I’ve not done before, when @coltonn.lunsford .lunsford reached out wanting to get some shots with his pupper Diesel and his girl @isabellatesmer because unfortunately Diesels cancer has come back I didn’t hesitate to try to make it happen.
I’ve had dogs pretty much my whole life, I know what they can mean to you, I know that #cancersucks and I know that when you think you’re going to lose something that holds a piece of your heart, you want to do anything possible to capture enough memories, keep them close and hang on while you can.
I’ve had to say goodbye instantly and I’ve had time to say goodbye, both hurt just as bad and both suck beyond belief. I work as a veterinary technician and I always tell people, “it hurts no matter how or when you say goodbye, it’s never easy and it always hurts”.
It hurts like hell to tell someone you love goodbye, even if you know that’s what’s best for them. We tell people it’s a blessing to help our friends not hurt anymore, but we still hurt, we still miss them, we still look for them. But at least they are out of their pain.

It was an honor to photograph Diesel, he loved this day, he had treats and toys and so many kisses. I’m sure that’s what he will experience for the remainder of his days, love beyond measure, kisses more than you can imagine and treats to make his tummy happy.

Saying goodbye is hard, but sometimes it’s best, at least for one of us.

Have you ever heard of the Proust Effect? It’s the phenomenon where a memory, usually a vivid one is triggered by a smell. This happens to me sometimes, often I’d say.

My grandma used to make banana splits for me and my brother so the smell of ripe bananas takes me back to her kitchen on Eight Mile road. African violets in the window, pink rose bushes outside that window, her sliding glass door that let the sun shine in so warm on Callie her domestic shorthair cat that would lay in the wicker rocker in the corner. Or when I smell doublemint gum I remember her larger than life white purse and all the crinkled Kleenex that seemed to accompany her.

I’ve been walking through a parking lot only to be stopped in my tracks, spin around and breathing deep letting the smell enter my body and linger as long as it can, most often times it’s gone as quick as it came. I recently put on a shirt I hadn’t worn in quite a while, only to be completely enveloped in a familiar smell. I’m not sure how it got there, as I was certain the shirt was washed recently, but I was torn between taking it off to preserve it so I could come back for future visits or sitting on the floor with it in my hands, eyes closed and breathing it all in. I did a little of both if I’m being honest.
